Show Roundup 'Impressions' Offers Glances Into Terkey "Turkish Impressions," a creative thesis for a master's degree in modern mod-ern dance, will offer some intriguing intrigu-ing glances into Turkey and the lives and customs of its people, in a free concert Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2 in the Women's Gym west of the U Bookstore. Devised by Maranee Jones, a graduate of Oregon State, the dance concert will incorporate elements ele-ments from literature and folklore Miss Jones observed while on a Peace Corps mission to Turkey. Some 40 dancers will perform, all elaborately and authentically costumed cos-tumed by Miss Jones and Sydney Brooks. Some music used was made by Istanbul Radio; other music was taped during performances of the whirling dervishes, a religious sect founded 700 years ago and flourishing flourish-ing today despite a government ban. Mystical dances and interpretive will be featured, as well as many festive dances such as those celebrating cele-brating courtship and wedding (with magicians, a belly dancer, greased wrestling), folk dances from Gazi-antep, Gazi-antep, and the Erzencan candle dance. Members of the thesis committee are Dr. Elizabeth Hayes and Shirley Shir-ley Ririe of the dance department, and Col. Jacobsen of the Middle-East Middle-East department. , |
