Show CIA Challenged By Aprilmen A Central Intelligence Agency representative was challenged i Thursday afternoon by an April Committee spokesman. Jack Hanson, CIA personnel representative rep-resentative for the Rocky Mountain region, was challenged by a letter, to "appear publicly to the student-body student-body of the University of Utah and freely and openly answer questions concerning the nature and activities activi-ties of the Agency." Hanson was also cautioned, in the letter, that "failure to respond to this legitimate request will oblige ob-lige the April Committee to conclude con-clude that the Agency is operating in contradiction to the Constitution and in violation of the principles of democracy which the govern- ment of the United States ostensibly ostensib-ly espouses." When Hanson was asked about his response to the "challenge," he said, "No comment." Further questioning revealed that all decisions would be made by the Agency. Asked if the Agency was aware of the problem, Hanson said, "Yes, they're aware of a lot of things today." Thursday afternoon, April Committee Com-mittee members distributed copies of questions in front of the Federal Building, prepared by "a research group who spent four days in the library," according to Harold Noakes, committee member and deliverer of the "challenge." The questions are prefaced by a statement which says the CIA is "a secret spy organization." The statement suggests that when the CIA violates "international laws" or such American ideals as personal per-sonal rights to privacy, academic freedom, or justice in the courts," it "must" be questioned. The copies cop-ies deal with the CIA's involvement in the National Student Association, a libel suit and the 1956 Iranian situation. In a press release Thursday, committee spokesman Phil Derby said, "The CIA's refusal to respond to our challenge shows that the CIA is unconstitutional and a perversion per-version of democratic ideals." According to the release, "the committee accomplished its primary pri-mary goal when the CIA cancelled can-celled its recruiting engagement and transferred it to the Federal Building." |
