Show Trimble Tune By DAVE TRIMBLE Chronicle Associate Sports Editor What is school spirit? School spirit is attending the special dances, participating in campus activities, and supporting our fine university sports teams. Backing our school teams is of major importance when it comes to showing our school spirit. HOW ELSE are the athletes to play their best when they receive little support from the fans in the stands? Why did we show such a poor account of ourselves in the two games we lost in Ute Stadium this season? Because we had few people to prod our men. It is very hard on a person to make an attempt at playing his best when he can expect people to not give their best. You don't know what it is like to be out on a playing field and not hearing anyone but maybe yourself giving a pep talk to the team. WHEN WE all turn out to watch a ball game and do nothing but watch the game, what is expected to be the attitude of the participants? Are they to be able to fight for the Old Alma Mater?" Heavens No! This Saturday, October 30, is Homecoming here at the University Univer-sity In the morning, there it the traditional Homecoming Parade. Following the parade, will be the "Homecoming football game. The game will be a real thriller as Colorado State University is no pushover when it comes to a battle. Utah will be up for the contest con-test as they have come close but not close enough in pulling out two squeakers. They lost to New Mexico 13-10, and to Oregon State 10-6. These are the type of games that make a person avengeful. avenge-ful. I THINK that everyone ought to get out and root for the Redskins on Saturday afternoon. It is the least we can do for a group of boys who have put their heart into forming a well rounded squad of capable athletes. They have not worked every ' afternoon of the week just to go out and play football. The saying, "It's not whether you win or lose but how well you play the game", goes well backed, but it is much more satisfying satisfy-ing to the players if they receive the staunch support of every fan in the stadium. You may be disappointed if the team loses, but, think how depressed the players feel if they hear no cheering they have let you dwn. IF THERE is cheering in the stands, what is there to say for a missed play. At least the players know that they have the backing back-ing of the fans and they will try much harder to show you the kind of game you want to see and the kind of game they want to play. Think how wonderful it would be for the players to run out onto the field and see 30,000 loyal rooters. What more could be expected of the day but a resounding victory over a rough and tough Colorado State team. GET OUT and back the players Saturday as the Notre Dame players were backed when they dealt the University of Southern California a humiliating defeat. We need more spirit to be exhibited. It is not expected bul it is well received by everyone. |
