Show U. Hospital Pharmacy Supplies Rare Drugs By ALBERT FOSSAT Chronicle Staff Writer A vital humanitarian goal has been acheived by the University Hospital Pharmacy, where rare drugs will be made available throughout Utah and the Intermountain Area. THE RARE drugs, used infrequently, but of vital necessity in case of emergency, include certain types of snake anti-venom, cyanide antidote, botulism antitoxin, black widow spider anti-venom, anti-venom, and both anti-rabies serum and rabies vaccine. According to Eugene C. Speakman, director, supplies will be available 24 hours a day to physicians throughout Utah and the Intermountain Area, deliveries can be made by plane to places distant dis-tant from the University Medical Center. SHOULD the need arise, physicians may telephone their prescriptions pre-scriptions to a physician in the emergency area of the hospital. The University Hospital Pharmacy is to be commended for making these vital drugs to the physicians. There has been a vital need for this type of service. ALSO OFFERED at the new Pharmacy will be services on all types of drugs needed by the public in emergencies. For this purpose, the Pharmacy will be open from midnight to 8 a.m. This will alleviate much apprehension, particularly since no drug stores in the area are open all night. It will also alleviate much suffering by making the drugs available when they are needed after midnight. mid-night. Mr. Speakman stated that "We are not in competition with pharmacies of the Salt Lake Area. We are offering the service because no drugstores in the area remain open all night. We feel that, as a state institution, we should offer this night service to the public." The plane delivery of these infrequently used drugs to remote towns in Utah and the Intermountain Area will undoubtedly assist much in the saving of lives. |
