Show ; HOW MORE PAY EQUALS ECONOMY Former President Herbert Hoover is the head of a commission which has been studying the structure of the federal government, with an eye to recommending changes that will make for efficiency and economy. One of the recommendations would add to the salarj of the president and to that of a number of officials oi lcss-than-cabi.net rank. Strangely enough, Mr. Hoovei says that the increases, in the long run, will be economy. More strangely, perhaps, the former president is correct. cor-rect. Since the war something like 3,500,000 persons have left the government's employ and about 2,500,000 persons have been employed. Adequate salaries, it is believed would have prevented much of the turnover and, since il costs the government money to train workers, the net re suit of adequate pay will be economy. With more adequate salaries it is believed that work ers would tend to stay on the job. No private industry could afford such an extravagance. |
