Show LIVESTOCK MARKETS LOS ANGELES LIVESTOCK Some of the bloom that the cattle market has been showing for the past two months was effaced ef-faced this week under the combination combi-nation of heavier receipts and a slow outlet for the dressed product. pro-duct. Packers claim that increasing in-creasing resistance to current high prices for beef has slowed up the flow of meats from plant to consumer and this was reflected re-flected back to the live cattle market. There was, however, no surplus of the toppier grades of beef steers and comparable grades of heifers, these maintaining main-taining a fairly firm basis with spots as much as 50c higher in early rounds. New all-time highs for this market were recorded in sales of 1284 lb steers at $35 and 850 lb heifers at $33. However, the trade manifested signs of weakness toward the close of the period, even on good steers, while definite price raids were made on cows and bulls, ranging from around 50c to as much as $2 per cwt. Better grade cows eased 50c to $1 while many, of the medium and lower grade cows sagged $1.50 to $2 under a materially narrowed demand de-mand for such classes. While a few good cows commanded $27 or better during the week, late .sales above $25.50 were few and far between with bulk of medium me-dium to low good kinds ranging :$21 to $24 with commoner descriptions de-scriptions in the $20 bracket. Cutters largely $18.50 19.50 and canners mainly $1618, some shelly sorts at $1415. Bulls dropped to $24 26.50 on sawsag ekinds with a few beef kinds at $27.5028. Calves and vealers were mostly 50c to $1 lower than, the previous week, $30 being practical top in late rounds. Quite a few stockers and feeders showed up and the market in this division held fully steady. Fleshy feeders ranged up to $30,and good stockers stock-ers up to $29. A g'ood many plain and medium stockers, however, cleared at $2327. Hog supplies were lighter and prices advanced $11.50. Good grain fed butchers sold at $29 30 and sows climbed to a $20 to $22 basis. Feeder pigs moved at $26.5029.50, also reflecting an upward trend. Fat lambs also worked higher under limited offerings. A few good to choice spring lambs sold at $27.5028.75, the latter an all-time high at this point. |
