Show Work underway on vifa! wafer project Construction activity in the Strawberry Valley as seen from US Highway 40 is evidence that work has begun on the Strawberry Complex. Notice to proceed with constructcion of Water Hollow Tunnel of the Strawberry Aqueduct was issued is-sued May 1. The contract to construct Water Hollow Tunnel was awarded to Boyles Brothers Broth-ers Drilling Co and Gibbons and Reed Construction Co. on December 1, 1967 for $5,594,-828. $5,594,-828. Completion is scheduled for June 1971. Water Hollow Tunnel is the first major feature of the Strawberry Complex to be constructed. con-structed. The 4.5 mile-long tunnel tun-nel is part of the 37-mile long Strawberry Aqueduct. It will divert water from Water Hollow Hol-low Creek, a tributary of Current Cur-rent Creek, for storage in Strawberry Reservoir. Strawberry Straw-berry Aqueduct will eventually extend to Rock Creek and will intercept the flows of Rock Creek and several other streams tributary to Duchesne River. Strawberry Reservoir is to be enlarged to about 3 times its present capacicty by construction of Soldier Creek Dam about 7 miles downstream from the present Strawberry Dam. Highway 40 will be relocated east of Strawberry Reservoir to make way for the reservoir enlargement. en-largement. Work on tunnel Work is underway on the Water Hollow Tunnel and the channel from the tunnel outlet out-let portal into the reservoir. Heavy equipment can be seen from the highway, resembling busy ants as they clear the area ar-ea preparatory to drilling the tunnel at the outlet portal. A huge mecchanical mole will be imported and used later in the season to drill the tunnel. Cuttings Cut-tings from the tunnel will be hauled over the present highway high-way and dumped in te reservoir basin where they will be covered cov-ered with water to maintain the esthetic value of the area. The overpass to accomodate the hauling equipment can now be seen under construction. Construction on the 324 million mil-lion dollar Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project was begun about a year ago with ground breaking ceremonies near the Starvation Dam site. Work was started on the Starvation Star-vation Complex and was about 30 percent completed before adverse weather stoppages. |
