Show Artist surmounts handicap, ivns avjara tirii.iii m imiii t - ""- - -J A Mapleton artist, Wendell B. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, who has surmounted a handicap of being be-ing paralyzed from his chest down in 1964, to become a recognized rec-ognized artist, has been presented pre-sented the Inteernational Youth Service Award by the Provo LaSertoma Club. The presenta-i presenta-i tion was made at a special ' meeting at the Provo Utilities Building recently. Despite his handicap, Wendell Wen-dell has continued his career as a scholar and artist, it was pointed out as the award was made. Wendell attended school in Springville, where he was on the student council, participated participat-ed in music groups and showed a special talent in art. He has been active in Scouting and '- holds the rank of Star. He has been an active member of the s LDS Church. ' During the summer of 1964, when Wendell was a sophomore in high school, he was injured in a swimming accident. However, How-ever, he completed his high school requirements and graduated grad-uated with his class. Through the use of special braces on which brushes are strapped, Wendell has painted and sold many beautiful water-color water-color pictures and has been asked to put on a one-man show. Speaker at the award program pro-gram was Dean Fausett, distinguished dis-tinguished artist, who told of his own days as a struggling young artist and of a bicycle tour through Europe where he attended art lectures and tried to learn the languages of all the countries so he could understand un-derstand what was being said. He also referred to his work during World Wa r H when he was commissioned by the government gov-ernment to do murals for the Armed Forces and spent three years in Texas. He gave much encouragement to the young artist, urging him to continue (Cont. on back page, col. 7) WINS AWARD Paralyzed since an accident acci-dent in 1964, Wendell Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson of Mapleton, utilizes his time painting and is fast being recognized recog-nized for his fine talent.
