Show Work resumes af new high school sites following two-week strike by onion Electrical work on the Springrville and Payson high schools, was resumed Tuesday, after an interruption of about two weeks, due to picketing the sites by International Brotherhood of E 1 e c t r ical Workers, Local 354. It was the second time since June, that work has stopped on the schools because of union activity. The first was by the ironworkers. Jack Anderson, business representation rep-resentation of the IBEW, Salt Lake City, had stated that Hamilton Brothers firm (of which Gordon Hamilton of Springville is a member) through their contract with Ne-bo Ne-bo School District, were paying sub-standard wages in violation viola-tion of union standards. He said also the company was not employing union electricians on the two jobs and that he had been unable to get in touch with the Hamiltons. Denies charges A spokesman for Hamilton Brother Electric denied charges char-ges made by the union and said that secondary boycott charges had been filed with the National Labor R e 1 a t i o ns Board by his company against "the sister unions" which shut down all work on the two schools. The statement is as follows: "The position of Hamilton Brothers Electric is that the obvious and avowed purpose of the union's picketing is to cause Hamilton Brothers to sign a contract with the IBEW and to hire BEW members rather ra-ther than the regular employees employ-ees which Hamilton has used in the past. "Hamilton Brothers has not and would not now refuse to hire any union member applying apply-ing for available employment. They do, however, refuse to either fire their long-time employees em-ployees and replace them with union members, or require their employees to join the union against their will. "Hamilton Brothers wages and benefits are not sub-standard, but are equivalent to union conditions of employment. employ-ment. None of Hamilton Brothers Broth-ers employees has walked off the school jobs or refused to i work or expressed dissatisfaction dissatisfac-tion with their working condi- j tions. "Contrary to the representa- tion of the IBEW there has been no violations of Utah State Law by either Nebo District Dis-trict or Hamilton Brothers in the contract that exists between be-tween the School District and Hamilton Brothers, or the wages wag-es and benefits being paid on the school jobs. "It would, of course, be a clear violation of Utah's right- tO-WorV law fnr thA Snhnnl District to require that employees em-ployees working on the school jobs be union members. "The IBEW has completely-misrepresented completely-misrepresented the situation with respect to its attempts to " ""- - . : ? 1 iLJkr 1 " ;: ,W,il,MWL..ll,..,.,,r...'HW....... .,.-i. .. In fact, Hamilton Brothers and its representatives placed several sev-eral calls to Mr. Jack Anderson's Ander-son's office on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They were told on most occasions that Mr. Anderson was out for a few minutes and would re- j turn their calls as soon as he returned to the office. No communication com-munication was received from Mr. Anderson on either Monday or Tuesday. i "Hamilton Brothers are per- ; fectly willing to discuss this ! matter with the unions at any ; reasonable time and place. "It is unfortunate that the IBEW and its sister unions ! chose to involve other employers employ-ers who have union contracts and who employ union members. mem-bers. This caused a shutdown ' of both school jobs with resulting result-ing delays, expenses, and loss of wages because the unions brought pressures on employers employ-ers and persons with whom they have no legitimate dis- ; pute. Secondary boycott charges char-ges have been filed against such unions with the National ! Labor Relations Board. The NLRB is proceding with an in- I vestigation of such charges." |
