Show Devils meet Bear River High team at 7 p.m. in consolation battle in upper bracket championship games today. Semi-finals will be held Friday and then all remaining teams in the meet will play in the BYTJ fieldhouse Saturday for the finals. Springville's Red Devils moved into the consolation bracket of the Class A basketball basket-ball tournament after losing a disheartening opener to Clearfield Clear-field 70-65 Tuesday in the University Uni-versity of Utah Fieldhouse. They meet Bear River tonight at 7 p.m. in a consolation battle. bat-tle. Coach Hal Jensen's five was unable to shake off the first game jitters, apparently, and although they played a whale of a second half, actually lost the contest in the second quarter quar-ter when Clearfield swept the boards to increase a 14-23 first quarter lead to 42-29. The taller tal-ler Falcons were out hustling the Devils throughout the first half to take the big lead. The second half was quite a different story as Spring-ville Spring-ville came back with vengence and a sticky pressing defense which, at one time, gave them three quick baskets on steals and closed the 13 point half-time half-time deficit to only 7 at the three quarter mark 54-47. iSpringville had come within 3 points of the leaders with only a minute left in the final quarter quar-ter and had an opportunity at the foul line to close it to within with-in one point, but the foul was missed and Clearfield cinched the game with a basket. John Averett, Alan Miner and Val Christensen were the big guns for the Devils getting 20, 18 and 17 points respectively. Gardner hit 21 for the winners. Other Tuesday results were: Olympus 59, Bear River 54, Ogden 78, Murray 77, American Ameri-can Fork 89, and Bountiful 57. Highland met Jordan, and Granite played Provo in the championship games Wednesday Wednes-day in the one bracket while Olympus vs Clearvield and Ogden Og-den and American Fork meets |
