Show Cougars begin f hoop practice j Basketball practice began i last Friday at Brigham Young i University with 17 players bid- i ding for a berth on Coach i Stan Watts' varsity. i The Cougars will have seven J weeks of practice before they f open the 1965-66 season f against Illinois. Season tipoff f is scheduled for Dec. 3, in Pro- vo. I Answering the call to the first day of practice will be 12 players who made the South American tour this summer, I plus five others who will be I vying for a spot on the varsity. I The veterans of Latin Amer- I ican swing are guards Dick I Nemleka (6-0), Jeff Congdon I (6-1), Jim Jimas (6-1), Ken i James (6-3), Randy Schouten t (6-0) ; forwards Steve Kramer i (6-4), Neil Roberts (6-5), Bill i Ruffner (6-5), Gary Hill (6-4); i and centers Orville Fisher (6- i 11), and Jim Eakins (6-11), t and Craig Raymond (6-11). i Others reporting for varsity f practice are guard Chuck f Tebbs (5-10), a mission re- f turnee; forward Paul Loveday (6-9), a mission returnee who f formerly played at Bakersfield I Junior College; guard Bob Bur- T ton (5-9) a transfer from West 1 Valley Junior College; forward I i LeRoy Maughan (6-8) who B i missed his freshman year be- L cause of an injury; and for- U ward Bob Millet (6-4) a mem- B ber of the '65 freshman team. Bracken Tj Lee, wife of the mayor of Salt D Lake City, was the guest B speaker. D The subject on which Mrs. E Lee spoke was "Six Wonderful L Women of the West," giving a I brief account of the accom- I plishments and pioneer exper- I iences of some of the earliest I women in Utah. I The meeting was in charge t of President Alice Sudweeks A who asked Nell Alleman to i read the club collect and Mrs. J Beulah Whiting gave the topic i of the day. Special guests of the after- noon were Hilda Grant visit- j ing here from Haden Lake, j Idaho, and Mrs. Don Clegg j from San Lorenzo, Calif. The meeting closed with a j nicely arranged lunch served j by the hostess to twenty club j members and guests. . Next meeting is to be Oct. j 22, at the home of Mary Ma- ' ; son.
