Show Teacher pay up Public school teachers today are receiving 65 percent more money in their pay checks, on the average, than ten years ago. According to the U.S. Department De-partment of Commerce, salaries salar-ies of teachers in the nation's public elementary and secondary second-ary schools rose from an average av-erage of $3,605 to $5,963 between be-tween 1954 and 1964. In 1954, 82 percent of the teachers earned under $4,500. This year the percentage is 17. And in just the last four years the number of teachers earning $6,500 and over has more than doubled. |
