Show Antiques lost in barn fire here Monday The second damaging fire in four days here Monday, burned a huge barn in the rear of the G. S. Wood Mercantile, Inc., property resulting in inestimable inesti-mable loss to its contents which comprised many antiques. an-tiques. The barn had been used for storage of numerous items, including in-cluding a new studebaker steel-tired steel-tired wagon, 64 years old, which had not been uncrated. There were two antique cars, a 1926 Meteor and a 1927 Essex, Es-sex, beautiful slabs of marble, antique lamp fixtures and many other items, all of which the store owners had planned to use in their store. There were also several pieces of valuable val-uable farm equipment in the barn as well as diesel fuel which exploded and hampered the work of the firemen. Firemen used four pieces of equipment to keep the blaze (Continued on Page 12, Col. 7) Antiques lost in fire (Continued from Page One.) under control and to keep it from spreading to nearby business bus-iness houses. Cause of the fire is unknown. Neighbors reported smelling smoke Sunday night and it is believed the fire smoldered all night and burst into flames early Monday. Hugh Gardner, owner of the store and George Henderson, manager, reported that they had planned on romoving many of the items from the barn this week, including the antique wagon, and place them in the store which is being converted into an antique shop and general merchandise establishment. |
