Wilkinson as president of the. Brigham Young University Uni-versity was announced today Jat the monthly meeting of the "iBoard of Trustees, held at Salt 'jLake City. -I Dr. Wilkinson also an-nounced an-nounced that he would resign as Chancellor of the Unified j Church School System of the IlDS Church. Termination of both positions 1 will be made as soon as satis- factory, arrangements can be jmade and successors named for I the posts, it was reported. "This is not an easy step for me to take. I have received Jtremendous satisfaction from my work at the BYU and also with the Church School System assignment, but new challenges and responsibilities have developed devel-oped which call for decisions in the near future," Dr. Wilkinson Wil-kinson said. "As to 'the BYU I am grateful grate-ful to an understanding Board of Trustees and to competent and faithful faculty for the full measure of support they have given me. Without the support of the Board we would not have been able to build one of the most functional and beautiful campuses in America. To the faculty goes the honor and credit for training students stu-dents of strong character and high scholarship, whose services serv-ices are sought throughout the f world." "I am equally proud of the advancements made and the competence and spirit of service serv-ice of the faculties of Ricks College, the Institutes and ) Seminaries, the LDS Business College, Juarez Academy and over 20 elementary schools in Mexico. My heart will always 3 abide with all of them," Dr. Wilkinson continued. The dynamic BYU leader is "la senior partner in the law " firm of Wilkinson, Cragun and Barker in Washington, D. C, a firm that he organized in . 1953. Under his leadership the BYU has become the largest I institution of higher learning in i the Great Basin and the larg-1 larg-1 est church-related university in the nation. 1 During his tenure, theBYU enrollment has grown more than 200 percent to a present total of 15,398 and more than 80 major permanent buildings have been constructed on the campus. As Chancellor, he has been administrator of one university, one .junior college, 161 institutes insti-tutes of religion at universities and colleges, and 1658 seminaries seminar-ies of religion. Under his guidance guid-ance enrollment in these institutions institu-tions has increased from around 35,000 to 120,000 Dr. Wilkinson was born in Ogden and attended Weber College. He received his B. A. degree at BYU in 1921 and the LL.B at George Washington University in 1926, doctor of Juridical Science degree at Harvard University in 1927 and honorary doctor of laws degree at BYU in 1957. He served as faculty member at the New Jersey Law School for several years before being employed by the law firm headed head-ed by Hon. Charles Evans Hughes in New York City. In 1935 he joined in a law partnership part-nership with Walter Gladstone Moyle and organized his own firm in Washington D. C. in 1940. His most famous law case came while serving as attorney for the Ute Indians. It resulted in a "judgement totaling $25, 000,000, the largest judgement ever rendered by the U. S. Court of Claims against the United States. Dr. Wilkinson has been prominent in civic, educational and political circles and is in demand as a national speaker. Only last month he addressed the 68th Congress of American Industry in New York City as one of its principal speakers. Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, who today announced his resignation resigna-tion as president of Brigham Young University and as Chancellor of the Unified Church School System of the LDS Church. |
