Exhibit to open at Braithwaite Gallery CEDAR CITY - The Braitwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Southern Utah State College, has announced an-nounced that the exhibit, "Sigmund Abeles: The First Twenty Years," will be on display Sept. 9 through Oct. 1. According to Prof. Thomas A. Leek, SUSC art curator, the exhibit includes drawings and lithographs and was arranged, for showing here, with the University of Nebraska. Lincoln. Sigmund Abeles is professor of the arts at the University of New Hampshire and resides in Madbury. He is a 1955 graduate of the University of South Carolina. The artist, one of the country's finest contemporary con-temporary draftsmen, holds fast to the ideals that governed art from the 14th century to the end of the 19th century. He eschewed formalist, abstract tendencies and says he "chose Rembrandt Rem-brandt over Cezanne very early on and have not wavered." The significance of Abeles' choice lies in the fact that he and others like him find an infinite fascination with the things of the world. Which is not to say that he only slavishly copies what is before his eyes, because his work goes beyond that. Reality is only the beginning, the basis of a work that seeks to explain ex-plain and interpret meanings and establish an understanding of temporal events and images. To do this he exaggerates certain elements, obscures other and combines people and objects in sometimes disquieting 1 ways. |
