Show New report released on automobile fatalities SALT LAKE CITY -The Utah Highway Safety Office has just come out with an extensive report and analysis of traffic ,,,T.he picture may be- . eve"n worse because of rapid growth in Utah and -the trend toward smaller cars and motorcycles. On the other hand we may be able to save many lives by effectively reducing crashes involving in-volving drinking drivers. As the end of July 1982 we are 35 fatals below 1981 for the same seven-month seven-month period. crashes for 1981 and prior years. The report shows that during the 1980's the major impact on fatalities came from the energy crisit. The year of 1972 is still the worst year in Utah history with 382 deaths from highway mishaps. During the energy shortage period lives lost dropped to 228 in 1974. Last year, 364 people were killed one a day. It is projected that we will not hit the 1974 high until 1988. If current trends continue we will go over the 400 fatality level sometime early in the 1990's. |
