Show President Shprratt writes Proposed cut will impact SUSC CEDAR CITY -Proposed federal budget cuts in student financial aid programs will have a serious impact on Southern Utah State College, according to SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt. In a letter sent to the Utah congressional delegation, President Sherratt pointed out that "The proposed massive budget cuts in the student JL financial aid programs by the Reagan Administration Ad-ministration would seriously affect the ability of our students to continue their college education. "Nearly 70 percent of our students are receiving financial aid from one or more of the federal financial aid programs," Sherratt wrote. "Any reduction in Pell Grants, College Work-Study Funds, State Student Incentive Grants or Guaranteed Student Loan Funds will have a direct and measurable impact on the ability of this college to fill its significant educational responsibility to the citizens of Utah." He indicated that over 90 percent of SUSC students come from Utah, and that many are first generation college JL students. Sherratt stated that because of high unemployment unem-ployment rates, many people have turned to SUSC as a resource to help them improve or develop marketable job skills. "If the budget cuts go through as proposed," he wrote, "we would simply be closing the door on these same people. "Since becoming President of Southern Utah State College in January of this year, I have become increasingly in-creasingly aware of the critical need the majority of our students have for financial aid," Sherratt wrote. "I strongly urge you to not support reductions in financial aid programs which are so critically needed by the people of our area." |
