Show SUSC tracksters speed off to good season start CEDAR CITY - Eight first places in a "very informal" track meet at Las Vegas, Nev., last week have promoted an outburst of optimism from Southern Utah State College track Coach Boyd Adams. "I'm quite pleased with the way things are shaping up," Adams says. "Our times and distances were quite good some very good for this early in the season." SUSC's next meet isn't until March 20, the BYU Invitational. Two new SUSC records were established in the meet hosted by UNLV and attended by athletes from Brigham Young University, UNLV, SUSC and College of Eastern Utah. Russ Eyre, a converted hurdler, smashed the school 800 meter record by running a 1:54.1. The other mark that fell was in the 400 meter intermediate in-termediate hurdles where Gordon Rawlinsqn clicked off a 54.1 timing. Both took first place in the meet where no team scores were kept. Other firsts, with Adams pleasing times-distances times-distances went to Gordon Hyde, 10,000 meters, 32:20; the 400 meter (4 x 100) relay team (Dave Evans, Adrian Sampson, Gordon Rawlinson, Leo Hebert), 42.2; Hebert, 100 and 200 meters, 10.7 and 21.8; Bruce Bryan, pole vault, 15-0; and Adrian Sampson, long jump, 22-7. 22-7. Adams was especially impressed with Hyde in the 10,000, Erye in the 800 and Hebert in the 200. Several other athletes placed including Robert Pyper (2nd, pole vault), Bryan (2nd, javelin), Bruce Preator (2nd, long jump), Scott Guthrie (2nd, triple jump and 2nd 400), the 4 x 400 relay team (Rawlinson, Guthrie, Sampson, Eyre, 3rd), Hernando Hernandez Her-nandez (5th, 1,500) Sampson (4th, 100), Rawlinson (3rd, 110 high hurdles), and Chad Jones, Dale Cable, Kee Yazzie, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10,000 meters). |
