Show LDS music workshop New challenges facing musicians and music directors in the LDS Church will be discussed at the annual Chuch Music Workshop to be held at Brigham Young University Aug. 11 to 14. Dr. Michael Moody, director of the Churph Music Division and one of 37 faculty members conducting the workshop, said increased membership mem-bership of the LDS Church throughout the world, the new consolidated con-solidated meeting schedule and cultural differences and needs and yet maintain a unified approach. "With the consolidated meeting schedule, questions such as How do we learn the hymns? and When do our choirs practice? are vital and challenging. "Also, those reponsible for church music need a sense of propriety toward appropriate worship music so that they will be able to make decisions based on the policies and guidelines," he said. Moody and other faculty will conduct classes to discuss the challenge of new trends in church music, appropriate ap-propriate music, and how to fit music into the block meeting schedule. In addition to classes, noon and evening recitals will be daily features of the workshop. John Longhurst, Mormon Tabernacle organist, will give a public recital Aug. .12. Outstanding ward choirs and other musicians will appear on the performance program. Each hour of the four-day four-day workshop will offer multiple classes in the areas of children's music, vocal music, piano, general church music, theory and composition, choral and organ. Dr. Parley Belnap of the BYU Music Department Depart-ment said, "We have classes for the very beginning beginner and for the more advanced musician. Even teenagers teen-agers who are mature and desirous to learn will be able to gain much from the workshop. "The faculty includes people who are professionals and some who are hard working, effective amateurs. We've tried to touch all points of church music and church music personnel." per-sonnel."
