Show Crop production range conditions forecast Winter Wheat Production Up: Production of winter wheat in Utah is expected to increase during 1980, according to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. On fjuly 1 farmers and others associated with ' the in-' dustry estimated the current crop at 5,940,000 bushels, an 18 percent increase from a year ago. A year ago 210,000 acres were harvested yielding 24.0 bushels per acre. Spring wheat production was expected to equal 984,000 bushels, only 60 percent of a year earlier. The forecasted yield per acre, at 41.0 bushels was on a par with last year but acreage for harvest was much lower-24,000 acres compared with" 40,000 acres last year. . Barley and Oats Production Down Slightly: The. first forecast of barley production was ; set at 8,840,000 bushels, 2 percent less than a year earlier. Acreage for average yield per acre was only 65.0 bushels compared with 69.0 the previous crop. Oats for grain were also predicted under a year ago. The total 1980 crop was set at 696,000 bushels, 2 percent less than the 1979 crop of 708,000 bushels. Pasture and Range Feed Conditionone of the Best: Rated condition of pasture and range feed on July 1 was 94 percent of normal, the highest since 1973 and the second best since records have been kept. A year ago the rating was 83 and the five year average for this date was 79. Range feed in the higher elevations now in use was a little later than in recent years but is now providing good to excellent ex-cellent amounts of feed for livestock. Lower altitude grasses were mature but also held good grass supplies while they were in.use. Soil moisture was becoming short in these areas. |
