Show Utah Transportation approve projects The Utah Transportation Tran-sportation Commission has approved two Iron County projects, costing $13,053, as part of its $1.5 million project for pedestrian safety in Fiscal Year 1981. The three projects include: In Cedar City-Center Street, from Main Street to the east city limits, a sidewalk and structure. Cost $8,053. In F'aragonah--On Main Street, a sidewalk. Cost $1,500. In Parowan--On 200 South and Main Streets, sidewalks. Cost $3,500. The funds were earmarked ear-marked for projects recommended by the Utah Department of Transportation and endorsed en-dorsed by the Ad Hoc Sidewalk Committee. The Committee was formed to insure that all interested groups have input in the recommendations recom-mendations submitted to the Transportation Commission. General guidelines for distributing the funds use a formula including the number of pedestrian accidents, general population and the number of school children in each county. Priorities within each county are based on a number of factors, including in-cluding projects started but- not completed in previous years plus a hazard index developed by the UDOT Division of Safety. That index is based on the speed limit, volume of traffic, pedestrian data, proximity to schools and the accident rate at each proposed location. The motion was passed unanimously by the Commission. Commissioner Com-missioner Sam Taylor noted that in many cases funds are stretched by matching monies or labor contributed by cities or counties. "We are seeking more participation in this program," said Com-., missioner Taylor, "and would hope that more local governments would be willing to j provide matching funds 1 for our Pedestrian Safety Program." |
