HELENS 7 NATIONAL VOLCANIC 1 AREA DESIGNATED : Mount St. Helens, site ot volcanic eruptions since March, 1980, has been designated de-signated the first National Volcanic Area, a U.S. De. partment of Agriculture official of-ficial announced today. R. Max Peterson, chief of the USDA's Forest Service, Ser-vice, said he made the designation de-signation in recognition of the international andnational scientific and public interest in this unique area and to provide additional protection protec-tion for its important geologic geo-logic features. The designated area in. eludes 84,710 acres within and adjacent to the Glfford Pinchot National Forest in the State of Washington.
