Show San SjuAtico Valley Vout S VKUvnt ZS iljff Barbara Mayer m'jziz? I was mistaken on the date when SanRustlco was named, so I thought to clarify it you might enjoy reading a portion of Father Esca-lante's Esca-lante's diary, beginning Oct. 9, 1776. "We left Santa Brigida, (Mllford) going south, and having traveled six leagues with less difficulty than yesterday, yes-terday, because the ground now was not so soft nor so wet, we camped near a bend formed by the valley and the great plain of NuestraSenora de la Luz, where it becomes wider, and from which place it continues for many leagues lea-gues to the southwest. We named the campsite SanRustlco, SanRus-tlco, where we found everything every-thing convenient, it being unnecessary un-necessary for us to go to the arroyo for water or to its meadows for pasturage. The water was rainwater and not . permanent. Today six leagues leag-ues south October 10. We set out from San Rustico toward the south, traveled a league and then went three more south-southwest, south-southwest, to a small and very low hill In the middle of the plain to ascertain by the view the extent of this valley and plain of La Luz. Ascending the hill we saw that from here It extended southwest more than thirty five or forty leagues, for we could scarcely see the sierras' where It ends in this direction. We saw also three springs of hot sulphurous water which are on top of and on the eastern slope of these hills, near and below which there are small patches of ground covered with salt -"peter. WT continued across the plain and having traveled travel-ed two leagues south we camped ( apparently some twelve miles southwest of Minersville) fearing that farther on we might not find water for the night. Here there was a great deal collected col-lected from the melted snow In a kind of lake, and there was also good pasturage. We named the campsite San Eleuterio. The Long Bearded Yutas extend this far south, and here apparently their territory terri-tory ends." As I was driving to Cedar last Thursday to help celebrate cele-brate my sister Majorle Gales birthday, my sister Carole Marquadson was their also. I passed Daisy Rowley on her way to Cedar, bless her heart, she has been driving a long time. She told me In 1907 when she was eight years old she drove the horse and buggy from Cedar with her mom.
