Show 20 SCHOOLS ENTER BRIDGE BUILDING How would you like to have to coax an ounce of balsa wood, a tube of glue, three pine blocks and a cardboard card-board deck to carry over a half ton before falling apart? Students from Southern Utah High Schools recently competed in the annual Bridge Building Contest at SUSC. Parowan High successfully success-fully defended its grand champion status by winning the contest for the third year in a row, but in most of the 20 participating schools, past champs succumbed suc-cumbed to new bridge building build-ing experts. Top honors went to Bill Terrell, a senior from Paro- wan, with a bridge strength of 5368 newtons (1207 lbs.) He won a full tuition scholarship scholar-ship to SUSC and other prizes. Three students tied for second: Brent Henrie, of Beaver; Phil Ralphs, ofDel-ta; ofDel-ta; and Lane Morgan, Piute. Their bridges tested out at 4755 newtons, 1069 lbs. Aaron Mayer was the top bridge builder from Milford High School. |
