Show ,LjL1u . 1 Dear Editor: Regarding "Johnny and Suzy Better Get Cracking": Certainly parents are responsible res-ponsible In the broadest sense of the term for the whole realm of their children's chil-dren's eductaion. However, How-ever, we are compeled by law to share this responsibility responsi-bility with our schools. Parents Par-ents are told by our government govern-ment that our children must go to school. Why? To acquire an education. In order to do this we must pay taxes to build buildings, hire teachers, etc. If we are going to have to teach them ourselves; our-selves; why don't we keep the tax money In our pocket and our children at home? Teachers have chosen to train In the field of education. educa-tion. We parents have not. To many parents the 'New' math looks like Greek. They only help confuse the child by trying to help him learn something they don't fully understand themselves. Most parents want to help their child learn, If they know how, but they don't want the teacher's Job. When I send my child to piano lessons, I don't expect him to come to me for Instruction. In-struction. My responsibility has been met by paying the-teacher, the-teacher, furnishing the piano, getting him to and from lessons, andglvlnghim encouragement. I feel the same way about sending him to school. If I don't like the work the piano teacher Is doing, I can change teachers, teach-ers, or stop giving my child ' lessons. What options are mine if the school teacher Is not teaching? When our children conduct themselves In an unbecoming manner at school, parents are to blame. When they don't learn at school, parents par-ents are to blame. Is the school void of responsibility? responsi-bility? Is their purpose to test our children on what ;, we parents have taught them ? This Is acomplexproblem that goes nowhere playing hot potato with responsibility. responsibili-ty. Let's improve the situation situ-ation by communicating with each other about what Is needed and helpful and expected. ex-pected. Perhaps If we parents have failed our responsibility, it's because: 1) We need to insist the government bow out with the detrimental laws of recent years. 2) We need to Insist on teacher review boards. 3) We need to find a way to have better communication with teachers; teach-ers; perhaps more parent-teacher parent-teacher conferences and insist in-sist on grade reports to the parent at least every nine weeks. 4) We need to Insist In-sist a child have proper knowledge of the level he Is In before being promoted promot-ed to the next grade. These are our kids! If the schools can't teach them, let us have them back. We will gladly take full responsibility respon-sibility of their education at home but we can't do that when they are required to be at school every day. SUE WHALEY Milford, Utah Dear Editor: In view of the MX Missile Site controversy, I wish, to point out two proven theories one: Einstein's Photo Electric Elec-tric Effect, 1905, which has resulted in the development of such space age weaponry as the plasm id laser; and two: Heisenberg's Principle Princi-ple of Uncertainty 1927. These two theories combine to illustrate the fallibility of stationary missile sites. Based upon this Irrefutable Irrefut-able knowledge, and In conjunction con-junction with such space age technology as NASA's EROS Satellite equipped with Its telescopic Infrared detector which resolves to 1.1 acre per clip, I am forced to inquire: in-quire: Are the Mega Corps pulling off a landgrab scam? For at the furtherest limits of my imagination (and that's going some) I can't visualize a General, even an American General, deploying ICBM's within a stationary nucleus anent this era of spy In the sky technology. Trusting in a free press and native American Common Com-mon sense, this matter should be pursued to its logical deductive conclusion. Post Haste. JOHN R. MCTAGUE Milford, Utah EDITOR'S NOTE: It maybe a land grab, but at least a constitutional one for a change, not like the wilderness wilder-ness areas. We don't argue that some of the new technology looks promising, but to the best of our knowledge the laser is still an infant. And one that would require more land space than MX of present. pres-ent. It also has the drawback draw-back of requiring up to three months to aim. Once ainied, it's capable of knocking out anything that crosses its path. So if you can get the Russians to direct di-rect all their missiles through the laser beam, we would agree that there Is no need for MX. "RED" Dear Red: Too often we only hear of the negative. Perhaps a letter let-ter such as this needs to be made known to the public. LEE R. PETTEY Principal, Milford High Dear Sir: Just a few lines to let you know how much we enjoyed en-joyed your students while staying with us during the Wrestling Tournament. They were very well behaved, be-haved, kept their room clean and were very patient and polite when in the Restaurant. Res-taurant. The waitresses and motel maids all remarked on what a good bunch of kids they were. We appreciate your staying stay-ing with us and look forward to having you again. We feel these are students you can be proud of. Respectfully, Connie Shephard, Motel Manager. LARRY SHAHEEN -Mngr. SHAHEENS, Salina, Utah EDITORS NOTE: Thanks Lee, we needed that. Most of us know that most students at MHS are fine young ladies and gentlemen, and only a small percentage cause problems. In our efforts to upgrade society, in the school or eslewhere, we must not lose site of the fact that there is a moral majority major-ity and give it our support and recognition. "Red" Dear Editor: Due to recent technological technologi-cal leaps, both Increased energy efficiency and use of energy from the sun offer bright possibilities for Utah and America. Currently the Utah State Legislature is considering three bills which would remove re-move barriers to solar development de-velopment and promote Its use in Utah. SB 215 would generally require that the State Government consider energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources as a public benefit in future planning of any zoning ordinances. ordi-nances. And SB 211 would amend Utah's current renewable re-newable energy system tax credit to allow credits for several renewable, energy systems, rather than just one, within the current $1,000 maximum over all credit. SB 211 would also entitle low income citizens to payment for any portion of their renewable energy system tax credit which exceed ex-ceed the tax liability. All Utahns should contact their state legislature to express ex-press support for these bills. The advantages of allowing greater energy efficiency and solar energy use range from decreased reliance on foreign oil to a healthier economy to less destruction of the environment. Utah's legislature should act now.
