After a week to settle down and create a workable offense and defe.ise, Coach Todd Peterson's Beavers looked extremely tenacious against a talented Virgin Valley quintet, who are two time 1-A state champs in Nevada. The Beavers were running and gunning from the opening tip off to the final buzzer in their 70-63 win over the Bulldogs. It was the first home victory for Coach Peterson. Pe-terson. Bruce Barnum, John Gleave and Kim Nielsen gave the Bulldogs a 17-13 first quarter lead, but Sheb Yard-ley, Yard-ley, Rick Carter and Jess Cox charged the backboards for a Beaver lead at half-time, half-time, 35-30: Steve Roberts and Jess Cox played superbly on defense, de-fense, blocking several Bulldog Bull-dog shots, while Yardley cleared the boards for the Quick outlet pass to Burt Myers and Smith. The Beaver offense didn't really take much time to set up with the methodical fast break accumulating their scoring attack. Myers, Yardley, Smith, Carter, and Brian Morgan, added 21 more points in the third period while Virgin Valley trailed, adding 17 points. Cox, Smith, and Roberts were the only ones of the Beaver five to find the nets in the fourth period, but the stable defense and 14 points "were adequate for Peter - son's first home victory .and : a promising season.
