Show ARCHAELOGICAL SITES LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER Two archaeological sites in Iron and Sevier counties have been listed in the National Na-tional Register of Historic Places, announced the Utah State Historical Sncietv. Long Flat Site jn Iron County and the Aspen -Cloud Rock Shelters in Sevier County were listed in the Register because of their scientific and archaeological significance. Long Flat Site is a large quarry site consistingof four major outcroppings of crypt -ocrystalline chert. It is located lo-cated in the Dixie National Forest. The Aspen -Cloud Rock Shelters are located on the north wall ofSaleratus Creek Canyon in the Fishlake National Na-tional Forest in Sevier County. The two rock shelters are habitation sites thought to be occupied by Fremont people t ' ' and they may have been previously pre-viously occupied by Archaic peoples. Because of the possibility of two or more cultures having hav-ing occupied them, the shelters shel-ters are very valuable in the study of culture change between be-tween the inhabitants. Soil and pollen samples found in the shelters may also prove useful in reconstructing the past environment available to the inhabitants of the shelters. |
