Show I A press release tnis week tells us that BLM paid the State of Utah $5,113,680 as Utah's share of mineral revenues rev-enues for the six month period per-iod from October 1977 to March 31, 1978. At first glance this looks to be a real bonus. But did you ever consider that if Utah administered its own public lands, they would get at least twice that much. If administered admin-istered right and industry were allowed to develop as it should be the revenues could be doubled, tripled or more. Think what the impact on the total economy would be if Kaiparowits, IPP, War- , ner Valley and Beaver County's Coun-ty's alunite were to be developed de-veloped as they should. The impact on Southern Utah would be a 100 times the five million dollars BLM re -truned for the whole state of Utah. And the state would be better for it. - 0 But Kaiparowits is dead, alunite shelved, Warner Valley Val-ley has been bumped and IPP is being kicked around the state, and not allowed to settle. It also will probably fall victim to inflation, bureaucratic delays, and unreasonable environmental regulations. Much of this could be rectified rec-tified by returning jurisdiction jurisdic-tion of public lands to the state. The Public Land Users Coalition has a plan to do just that. They've printed initiative petitions, and are passing them in the eleven western states and Alaska. The so-called public land states. These petitions will force each state legislature to take control of the public lands within its boundrys and make it a felony for any other person, per-son, whether corporate or individual, or any other entity (including BLM and the Forest Service) to exercise jurisdiction over these public pub-lic lands. If you are interested in signing or passing one of these petitions contact Red at the COUNTY NEWS and we'll see that one is made available. avail-able. - 0 - Maybe now you'll listen to the old Redhead. Never plant your garden in Beaver County until May 10th. That foot of snow May 6th frost bit the lilacs again. But it didn't get our tomatoes. We haven't planted them yet. - 0 - Being confined to the easy chair or bed when we're not on the job has made it possible to watch the NBA playoffs. Never did we enjoy a series ser-ies as much as last year between be-tween the . Blazers and 76'ers. On paper it looked like a repeat this year. But the Blazers are out and the Washington Bullets have the 76'ers on the ropes. And right now it looks as if it will be Washington State's Seattle Supersonics vs the Washington, D.C. Bullets. If you want to watch some fine basketball, give the playoffs play-offs a try. 0 |
