Show Harriott ebargos badnof political other increases, and give j everybody a break, is to give an across-the-board tax cut to all American in the amount of 10 for three years, a total of 30. Then we would see some benefits. j Marriott said he was pleased to see the President ask for an increase in defense de-fense capability. He said, "Carter has made some serious ser-ious mistakes in the past by cutting the B-l Bomber and other vital programs and we were lucky to get as much I as we did. I hope this is at least an indication that he wants us to negotiate from a position of strength in the SALT talks with the Russians." He pointed out that though the Carter budget has many faults, they can be corrected by Congress. "I am more than anxious to go to work to return to the budget what Utah has been denied for political reasons. The President has shown us very graphically the difference dif-ference between a politician and a statesman. We have yet to see the statesman in our President," he said. Congressman Dan Marriott Mar-riott has called the half trillion tril-lion dollar U.S. budget proposed pro-posed by President Jimmy Carter "the most politically motivated act perpetrated to date on the American people, especially Utahns." Noting that it is the largest lar-gest budget in the nation's history, Marriott accused the President of selling Utah short while trying ineptly to balance the budget. "The President has lied to, ignored, and virtually stepped step-ped on the people Utah, our entire Congressional delegation, dele-gation, and even the Governor, Gover-nor, to achieve his ends and all because he has no need of us in the next election. "Last year he assured us all that he would leave the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project alone and even consider speeding it up to save some tax dollars. Then, after sending Vice President Mondale and Interior Secretary Andrus to Utah to dish out more hollow promises about 'states rights' in water policy determination, deter-mination, we find he stabbed us in the back with his budget by cutting the Bonneville Bonne-ville Unit to less than half the promised minimum, down to $27.3 million. "To me that is outright deceptive and totally irresponsible. irres-ponsible. It's as though he couldn't care less what happens hap-pens to the people of a state that didn't vote for him in the last election. "The Irony is that if we increased the budget and completed the Bonneville Unit in 8 years instead of the planned 22, we would save more than $700 million in inflation costs alone, to say nothing of the billions to be gained in benefits that would come that much sooner. But apparently that's too far-sighted far-sighted for Mr. Carter. The next election comes too soon to worry about the long run," he said. With respect to the President's Pres-ident's tax cut proposals, Marriott said they were too small and would do little, if any good. "The only significant sig-nificant effect they would have would be to increase the deficit," he said, "They would hardly even offset the President's own -tax increases in Social Security and energy. The way to gen r erate more revenue," offset |
