Show 1 by Terry Lemon The Beavers made their 8th appearance of the last nine years for the 1-A State Championship and were shooting for their 5th State title, but came up on the short end last Friday, as they watched their. 6-3 halftime lead disappear to a 16-6 defeat de-feat to the So. Summit Wildcats. Wild-cats. The Wildcats brought the opening kick-off back to their own 30 yard line. Their first series of plays gained only 4 yards on three running plays, and on 4th and 6, punted. Blair Smith called for fair catch on the punt at the 32. The Beaver's first play from scrimmage was called back on encroachment, puttingthe Beavers back on the 27, with first and 15. Gary Goff s runs of 2 and 3 yards, and Williams Wil-liams incomplete pass intended in-tended for Blair Smith, forced forc-ed the Beavers to punt on 4th and 10. In good field position, the Beavers moved the ball up the middle for good yardage. The Beaver's only score came with 6:40 left in the 1st quarter on a series of 7 plays going 25 yards as quarterback Jeff Williams bootlegged from one yard out on 4th down. Dalton's kick was blocked. So. Summit took Dalton's kick to the 23. The Wildcats moved the ball well, gaining gain-ing 23 yards in 6 plays until, on 1st and 10 from the 46, gave up their second fumble, this time to Blair Smith on the 25. The Beavers had trouble moving the ball, and on 4th and 8, had to punt. Atkin's punt was partially blocked, and the Wildcats took over on the Beaver 40. The Wildcats' first score came on the 17 yard drive in 5 plays, to the 23, where, on 4th and 5, the quarterback kicker Atkinson put the Wildcats Wild-cats on the board with 3 from 23 yards out. Kelly Smith ran the kick-off kick-off out to the 30 for the Beavers. Bea-vers. Gary Goff's runs of 4 and 6 yards gave the Beavers Bea-vers another 1st and 10 on the 40. Bruce Carter and Mike Smith each gained a yard, and on 3rd down the Williams to B; Smith was incomplete, forcing the Beavers to punt. The Beaver defense tightened tight-ened up; Bruce Carter sacked the quarterback for a five yard loss. David Crook killed the second down for a loss of 1 yard. James Lindsay Lind-say and Ricky Carter combined com-bined to stop a sweep, and on 4th and 2 the Wildcats punted to the Beaver 40. On first down, Gary Goff was hit behind the line of scrimmage for a4yardloss. The 2 yard 2nd and 3rd down runs of Daniel Robinson forced the Beavers to punt on 4th and 6. The Wildcats took over on their own 29. The Beavers got a break, when on first down, Blair Smith intercepted the long Wildcat pass and ran back to the Beavers' own 45. Gary Goff gained 2 on 1st down. The Wildcats made gains of 8 yards on first and 3 yards on second down, giving them Lindsay and Crook sacked the quarterback. The third down draw play went 17 yards, but was short of the 1st down. The Wildcats gam -bled, but the Beaver defense held and the Beavers took over on their own 30. Williams' pass to Dave Crook was incomplete, and on 2nd down, Williams threw short of Blair Smith. The 3rd down quarterback keeper keep-er gained nothing, and with 40 seconds left in the game on 4th down, Williams was sacked for a 1 yard loss, to give the Wildcats possession. posses-sion. On 1st down, James Lindsay shot the gap to sack the Sum -mit quarterback for an 8 yard loss, as the 1st half ended, Beaver 6 -South Summit 3. The opening kickoff was taken by Mike Smith to the 2 5. Steve Bartlett gave the Beavers first and 10 on the 35 with his 8 yard carry. But a third down pass intended in-tended for Blair Smith fell incomplete, and the Beavers punted with 9:30 left in the 3rd quarter. The Beavers got the ball back only 2 plays later, as Clay Robinson picked up the Wildcat fumble on the 50. The Beavers had no better luck holding on the ball, a on their second play from scrimmage, turned the ball back over to the Wildcats on the 44, with 7:40 left in the 3rd. The Wildcats capitalized on the fumble recovery, as they drove 44 yards in 5 plays for the TD, two passes, one for 9 yards and one 15 yards, along with several good runs set up the 16 yard TD pass from Atkinson to Bart Johnson, with 5:25 left in the 3rd quarter. Mike Smith saved a near TD run of Johnson, stopping him at the 11. Two plays later, quarterback Atkinson scored from 5 yards out for the final score of the game coming, with 1:10 left in the 3rd quater. The Beavers tried to get back in the game by using Jeff Williams to Gary Goff pitchouts, but couldn't open up any big gainers. The Beavers' luck didn't change, and on 1st down turned turn-ed the ball over on another fumble. The Wildcats recovered recov-ered on the 35, with 2:50 left in the game. The 1st down play was broken up as Mike Smith charged in and sacked Atkinson for a 3 yard loss. Two more yards were lost as |
