Show . Just Bstnecci You And Ih '6 X S it jj - "Red" WUSn When we blow one, we don't flimake it simple. Last week in 'the story about the Demo-jratic Demo-jratic Steak Fry, we somehow some-how managed to get August ij.30 to fall on Saturday instead " ot Tuesday, like the calendar has it. But' that wasn't enough. In )fthis little two paragraph story, we also managed to (flliget two Howards mixed up. We substituted Howard Brad- UJjfehaw for Comm. Chairman and democrat Howard Pry- r iitor. Bradshaw is more closely close-ly associated with the Re- publican Central Committee -in Beaver. Fortunately, we worked Tuesday evening instead of attending the steak fry where we might have been scalped. , -0- There was a good turnout to the Land Users Coalition Saturday, but we should have p jraised ten times that many ffrom our own little county. I All the sportsmen stayed Whom e. in front of the boob Jtube to watch the football game. Most of the cattle- Jj'men stayed home for that w or another reason. , If We almost hope the most : dire predictions come true ' and come deer season they come head-on with signs, "Public Land, No Hunting or Trespassing". (See story on roadless areas in this issue.) -0- Of course, most of the roadless areas this year are on Forest Service land. The Forest Service has been withdrawing roads for several sev-eral years and are several years ahead of BLM in this area. The bureaucrats are smart enough to go slowly, and so by the time most look up from the boob tube, it will be too late to do anything. -0- Ironically, anyone who tries to warn these pacified sportsmen, ranchers, or recreationists, becomes a doomsday alarmist and therefore a little bit loony. Unfortunately, this writer remembers a number of editorials edi-torials warning of the "Organic "Or-ganic Act", during the three years preceding its passage. But until last October 21st, no one paid any attention. In fact, few woke up until 1977, and many still refuse to face the fact that the people peo-ple are being drove off of the public land. -0- We warned, fought, wrote and stomped our feet about the reorganization and consolidation con-solidation of BLM. But nobody no-body listened when we predicted pre-dicted that the consolidation, consolida-tion, instead of cutting down on personnel, would increase. in-crease. Well, try this on for size. The Fillmore District of which Beaver County was a part, employed 32 people at the time of consolidation. There are approximately 100 (no one seems to know for sure) working (to use the term loosely) out of the main new building in Cedar C ity. The district maintains another office in Cedar City, Kanab and St. George. Figure it out yourself. -0- BLM now employes in the Cedar City office such per-(Continued per-(Continued on Page 2) HERE'S MORE ABOUT Just Between sons as public relations, visual vi-sual architects, landscape architects, etc. They've come a long way since the 30's. Last week -we carried a BLM press release we get four to ten a week on Page 1. It was beside the story on the Land Users Coalition meeting, and above the release on environmentalists environmen-talists challenging the patenting pat-enting seminar in San Francisco. Fran-cisco. Several asked why we wrote such contradictory ar -tides. Believe us, we didn't. It's impossible for us to write every article. Like any other newspaper, we use press releases, re-leases, even when they run contrary to our own beliefs and personal feelings. We expect ex-pect our readers to read the differing viewpoints and draw their own conclusions. -0- That's the best thing about a newspaper. Unlike the net -works, more than one opinion, opin-ion, viewpoint, or story is available, giving you the insight in-sight to make your own decision. de-cision. Walter Cronkite is just great, but we'd hate to have him doing all our thinking for us. Barbara Walters has made some great interviews, but she seldom asked all the questions we'd have liked to. -0- Every reporter's opinion is reflected in his writing. Because of this slant, it's wise to read as many accounts ac-counts of a happening as are possible. The differing viewpoints view-points bring out the truth. -0- We attempt to confine our opinions to this column or the editorial page. Both of which are signed. However, we make no attempt at-tempt to confine your reading read-ing to those columns, and provide space for differing opinions and varied press relases. We urge you to take advantage ad-vantage of this, plus any other sources you can find. Life is too short to spend it in someone else's shadow. |
