Show HATCH CALLS FOR HEARINGS ON COAL DIVESTITURE In a speech on the floor of the United States Senate today, to-day, Senator Orrln G. Hatch (R -Utah) called for hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee Com-mittee into the Federal Trade Commission's forced divestiture by Kennecott Copper Corporation of the Peabody Coal Company. The Senator from Utah called for the hearings based on his personal investigation of the FTC's role in the long (11-year) proceeding that may soon end with the sale of Peabody for $1.2 billion to a consortium of buyers. Senator Hatch said, "I am very suspicious of the FTC's involvement in this divestiture divesti-ture and believe there has been a gross misuse of government gov-ernment powers by the Federal Fed-eral Trade Commission in this matter." Senator Hatch is of the opinion that the FTC made an Incorrect decision when it called for the divestiture and is curious, after years of challenges and inquiries, why the Commission now refuses re-fuses to review its decision. |
