Show FCAG must show merit The FCAG (Five County Ass'n. of Govt.) must pass its first real test since first it got a foothold in Southern Utah, way back in 1971, and continued to work Its way into local government. After six years, the persons most responsible for its inception and continued existence are finally gone. Even though some of their replacements may be hand-picked, hand-picked, it's likely that the FCAG will still have to show merit or face the consequences. consequenc-es. Last Thursday, January 6, the FCAG paid tribute to these men who have been the life blood of the organization which has usurped much of the state and local power, and placed these powers in the hands of this body of appointed bureaucrats. Honored by the FCAG at SUSC last Thursday with a dinner hosted by the FCAG (whose money paid for that) were Dixie Leavitt, formerly state senator over the five counties and self-proclaimed father of the FCAG; Sidney J. Atkin, retiring member of the Utah House of Representatives Representa-tives from Washington and Iron Counties; Truman Bowler, Washington County Com -missioner; IvanMatheson, IronCountyCom -missioner, and now State Senator from the five county district; Fred Harris, Beaver County Commissioner; and James Yardley, Garfield County Commissioner. Neal Christensen, executive director of the FCAG, must have wept at the loss of these six gentlmen who he has been able to shape and mold to his every whim. Only Ivan Matheson will retain a seat on the steering committee, a non -voting seat. But Ivan in recent months has tried to shed himself of his involvement in the FCAG, and Christensen will find little comfort in his continued presence. Merrill MacDonafd, Kane County Commissioner, Com-missioner, Mayor Neal Lundberg, St. George, and Mayor Roy Young, Milford, are the only old stand-bys left for Christensen to count on. He must therefore convert new steering committee members fast or face obsolescence. Already the COUNTY NEWS has seen evidence of this attempt to be the good guy. For the first time in nearly four years, w received a copy of the last FCAG (December) (De-cember) Steering Committee minutes. An indication they will court a favorable press to help convert new members. The press is one segment of society that didn't automatically auto-matically smother the FCAG with love and kisses, except the self -proclaimed liberal Color Country Spectrum. We admonish those new members of the steering committee to look over the merchandise carefully before you buy. Regardless Re-gardless of precedence established by previous pre-vious members the Constitution does not allow them to give away your rights as duly elected representatives of your respective re-spective districts. So, look before you buy and if you buy, be sure to count your change. "Red" |
