He was a teacher brd' and we lived in several cities, ' finally coming to Milford. He Mil. taught school for forty rec. jtars." "We became the parents 0 six children one of flhom died in infancy. Our four boys all served in the "ere Armed Forces during World 15, War II. Our family circle who now includes 22 grandchil- Ices dren and 9 great -grandchil- 'son. dren." orial in 1938 Mrs. Hughes de cided to go into business for herself to help her daughter through college. "That was really nothing new," said Naomi, "I'd been making my own living since I was twelve years old. At first the business busi-ness was a floral shop, then little by little we added a few ladies things and we're still building it up today. I've enjoyed my work, but it's like anything else, we have our good days and our headache head-ache days. I like meeting people and find this part of my work very rewarding." Naomi loves all types of needlework and handwork and her lovely home is filled with beautiful needlepoint chairs, footstools, pictures and pillows. "I've never been one who could just sit and do nothing. Even while watching watch-ing TV or visiting, I like my hands to be busy." Serving in the church is routine for Naomi. While raising her family and building build-ing up her business, she still had time to serve in many capacities in various church organizations, plus being a 4-H leader and Grey Lady for the hospital as well. "I look forward to my mission mis-sion and will work to the best of my ability, but I'll also look forward to coming home to friends and family again. You know, I didn't realize how many friends I had, until they began stopping stop-ping by the shop to wish me well. The Special Interest Groups had a party for me last week so many came and they presented me with a lovely Missionary Diary. They say they'll miss me, but I'm sure they won't miss me as much as I'll miss them!" We send along our hopes for good health, good friends, and enjoyable work, Mrs. Hughes, and look forward (ex. your homecoming, too. After all Milford won't be the same without you! "Music is another source of pleasure for me," she said. "I remember as a girl we had an organ and sometimes some-times right after dinner, I'd run in and do my practicing, knowing that Mother would go ahead and do the dishes without me. My husband and I sang together at funerals, etc., for many years, and I still enjoy singing in choirs." Noticing the many paintings paint-ings on the walls, I asked if she'd been painting all her life. "I didn't take up painting paint-ing until after my husband's passing, 13 years ago. I had a son in the Air Force who was taking some classes in art. He wrote and said he thought I'd enjoy painting. 'You can just lose yourself in it, Mother,' he said, and sent me a beginners painting paint-ing kit. So I did take some classes and found that I really real-ly enjoyed it. Sometimes I'd go in and plan to paint for a half hour or so, ,and first thing I knew,, three .hours'-would .hours'-would have flown-, by. Paint -ing has brought me many wonderful hours of pleasure." plea-sure." "Since our children have lived in so many places around the world, we've traveled quite extensively mostly to visit them. I thought the Orient was most intriguing and enjoyed Europe, Eu-rope, Hawaii, etc., but I think if I had to choose one place to spend a long vacation, it would be Switzerland. Such a beautiful place!" A new adventure is beginning begin-ning for Mrs. Hughes. She is preparing to spend a year serving as a missionary for the LDS Church in the Georgia-Atlanta Mission. "This will be quite an adjustment ad-justment for me and a challenge, too, but all my lfcije I've been meeting challenges chal-lenges and I look forward to it. My grandson has been called to a mission in Chile, and he and I will both enter the mission home in Salt Lake on the same day." "I'm sure I will find Geo-gia Geo-gia a pleasant place. My daughter lived there years ago, and we visited there several times. The South is noted for it's great hospitality hospi-tality and I'm sure I'll find it so when I arrive." |
