Show Don't you believe it! It's still illegal to print winners of lotteries of any kind and even if the present legislation leg-islation in Congress, to make it possible to advertise certain cer-tain lotteries, raffles, etc., should get an affirmative vote, it won't help the many charity raffles in Utah. -0- The proposed legislation would only make it legal to print Information, winners, and advertising for those lotteries lot-teries legalized by the states in which they are conducted. This would eliminate all but just a few state-run lotteries, lotter-ies, and to our knowledge, none would be legal in Utah. The National Newspaper Assoc. and most weekly newspapers have for years supported legislation which would allow them to advertise adver-tise local church and charitable chari-table and civic organizations fund-raising raffles. However, How-ever, present laws prevent this advertising from going through the mails, and even if federal legislation now In Washington, D. C. is passed, unless Utah State legislators legislat-ors make steps in the right direction, local church, relief re-lief society, and civic and fraternal organizations, will still be in violation of the law, and regardless of how worthy their purpose - the News will still not be able to advertise for their cause. -0- Most local raffle chairman, chair-man, when we tell them we cannot help their worthwhile project, look at us as if we were some kind of scrooge. Now's the time to prove you believe in your worthwhile projects. Convince your Utah legislators to legalize lotteries lot-teries all of them or just those of a charitable nature and this newspaper, and we'd bet most in the state, will give all those charitable ones free publicity. -0- The irony has always been that while lotteries are noi legal in many states, including includ-ing Utah, and newspapers cannot use the malls even to advertise these charitable efforts, each year we re-cleve re-cleve through the mails, lottery lot-tery tickets from certain state financed institutions, who claim our donations will provide certain advantages which cannot be financed otherwise. oth-erwise. We find it very difficult to believe that the big mucky -muck politicians, Attorney General, Governor, and postal officials do not know of this state-wide (and sometimes some-times interstate) distribution. distribu-tion. We think, that like the rest of us, they jut turn their back and send the organization or-ganization or agency a check. -0- But this does not make lotteries legal. Both the buyer buy-er and seller are in violation viola-tion of state and federal laws. We believe that it's time we had laws that the majority ma-jority could live with. Certainly Cer-tainly we should legalize bingo bin-go and raffles by registered non-profit and charitable organizations. or-ganizations. We could also go for a state lottery to help finance fi-nance schools. We also believe be-lieve that any lottery generating gen-erating over $1000 gross revenue should be subject to state taxes and an audit of expenses and administrative costs. This would keep syndicated syndicat-ed gambling as illegal as it is now. But it would legalize the raffle of a quilt, by a re -lief society or any of a multitude mul-titude of other worthwhile causes. If you believe like we do, write your legislators legislat-ors they're In session now both state and federal. feder-al. -0- The Milford fans started their chant, "We're No. 1", Just a few minutes too soon last Friday.
