Show WE'RE PROUD! October 10 to 16 is National Newspaper Week and most newspapers will have to be forgiven if they toot their own horn just a little bit. We believe that freedom of the press is one of the most important of our bill of rights. A free press is the greatest guardian against corruption, in the country. Unlike the big networks, where a few individuals control the news newspapers are written by many people, and most stories of significance carry a byline. Few individuals see any situation in the same light, lbut if an individual, reads the varied viewpoints, offered on any controversial, or subject of majcr importance, he will be able to disseminate the facts from prejudice and opinion, and get a reasonably clear picture of the situation, sit-uation, and decide for himself, what is right or wrong, and what is good or bad. This wide variety of opinion, viewpoints, and reporting re-porting is offered by no other medium. And while newspapers news-papers offer more opinions through their editorial col-j col-j urnns. than any other medium, for the most part, they do label them for what they are, opinions, and do not pass them off as simple reporting. ! And another plus about newspapers I know of no other medium, which offers to its public, a complete and fair method of rebuttal, of expressing its viewpoint, regardless of the subject matter, True, tv in recent years has made some attempt at giving rebuttal time, and a few stations label their editorials editor-ials Ibut, how many comments will you hear a week over a network station one or possibly two from the many, many they must receive. They pick and choose as they do with the news, because the time is so expensive. Newspapers care about the little story, as well as the bis and sensational, they give space to recitals and luncheons, they care about you, no story gets dropped, because of a low rating. It is a responsible medium, and in our small way, we're proud to be a part of it. |
