Show POSTAL RATE BOOST SET FOR MAY 1GTII Postage rates are going up next Sunday. It will take eight cents to mail a letter, 11 cents if you send it by air. a penny postcard will cost six cents. Second and third-class mailing mail-ing rates, plus some fourth class rates, will jump from 10 percent to 20 percent. Special delivery will raise from 45 to 60 cents minimum and registered regis-tered mail costs from 80 to 95 cent. The May 16 boost comes under un-der what the U.S. Postal Service Ser-vice claims is its authoriiy to make temporary increases in postal rates pending a recommendation recom-mendation by the Postal Rate Commission. The action is being challenged challen-ged by a group of mail users, led by magazine and newspaper newspa-per publishers, who seek to halt the increases until the rate commission has time to act.
