To the Editor; In a community of this size, there are people of varying social so-cial and economic levels. I believe be-lieve that we have done pretty good in the past few years in living harmoniously together. But now it seems that one element ele-ment of this social structure is in the process of upsetting this harmony. As I recall Milford history in the early settling days, it was a pretty rough and wild community. com-munity. In the ensueing years the citizens of this community have banded together and have a clean and relatively decent place in which to live and bring up their families. In fact many people are considering Milford as a pretty nice community in which to settle down and retire. Experience in other communities commun-ities around the country, is that anytime you allow the drinking and gambling element a foot, they take a mile, and are continually trying to push the law just a little bit more. Permissiveness and relaxing of law enforcement has caused most of the problems in this country today. Whenever you look the other way, or allow a little stretching of the law, you are asking for trouble. I believe it is the responsibility responsibil-ity of the City Commission to guard against these tactics jealously jeal-ously or they will get out of hand. They are the watch dogs of city government, and should enforce all the laws for the good of all the people, in conjunction con-junction and harmony with the federal, state and county laws. I believe that Delmer Kirk offered a very good reason why the beer parlors should not be extended additional time to dispense dis-pense their beverage and impose im-pose a public nuisasre after mid-night within the city limits His rights as a citizen and hotel owner should be protected by the city fathers. If they allow this extension of time, they will not only affect Mr. Kirk's business livelihood and peace of mind, but the home of many families in this community as well. Drinking and the problems prob-lems it brings, has never added add-ed to the peace and tranquility of any home. An extension of the time beyond be-yond midnight is also going to add to the burdens of the law enforcement officers. It takes from two to three hours for things to quiet down after these establishments close their doors. Another problem of law enforcement en-forcement on which we need to concentrate any extra time and effort is in combating the drub abuse or sale and use by our youth in this community. We need to expend our efforts for improving youth activities and facilities, and for the uplifting up-lifting betterment of the community. com-munity. To illustrate what I said earlier ear-lier about giving a foot and they want or take a mile; We had one race meet a year, now they want to join the racing association and have para mutual mut-ual betting. Then the next step they will want is legalized gambling and bookies. Let hs adhere to the laws as they stand on the books Bob Wright |
