Show ALFALFA NOW 'GROWING GOOD' With the arrival of warm weather (finally) alfalfa is making good growth where it has been irrigated. This means that damage from alfalfa weevil weev-il may not be far away, says Grant Esplin, Utah State University Uni-versity Extension Agent. Alfalfa Al-falfa growers should keep an eye on their fields for signs of damage. If the leaves become be-come noticeably ragged it probably prob-ably will pay to use control measures. Several chemicals are recommended for alfalfa weevil control .including methyl meth-yl parthion, melathion, diazinon trithion, malathion plus meth-oxychlore meth-oxychlore and guthion. Last year good control was obtained with parathion. The county agent in Sevier County reported good results by using a combination of parathion and guthion. Guthion gives a longer long-er lasting protection but is more expensive. Parathion gives a fast control but the control is short lived and if new hatching taxes places a second build-up is possible. If the first crop can be taken tak-en off before damage is severe, stubble spraying can be done to protect the second crop. parathion and guthion should both be effective here. |
