Show Dalton-Mayer Crowned Ping Pong Champions Well, the champs are crowned crown-ed and the trophies awarded, and local boy, Clark Dalton took on the big Swede Dan Karlson in the final match and came out on top in the big up-, set of the evening. Approximately 100 people watched the final eight matches in each division, between the eight finalists in each division. All finalists were still eligible for at least the third place awards. The junior divsion (14 and under) was won by Doug May- er, who challenged by several adults throughout the tournament, tourna-ment, gave a good account and proved he was championship caliber by beating several of them. Doug is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Cook. Coming in second was Leslie Davis who suffered only one defeat throughout the tournament tour-nament in both brackets, and that in the championship game.i Steve Wilson, 11 years old came through on the final night after losing to Mayer in the finals of the preliminary bracket brack-et and to Roger Barnes, both 14 in the first game of the championship bracket. He had to win all his matches to place third and did just that, defeating defeat-ing Russel Smith 14, Rodney Holm, 13 and Roger Barnes in his final for the third place trophy. Tommy Yee took third place in the senior division with his consistently good defense, outlasting out-lasting Russel Mayer and Conrad Con-rad Steed. The championship matched rational and Olympic experience exper-ience of the big Swede Dan Karlson against a "don't give up" left hand of Clark Dalton. Clark played as he never had, making unbelievable returns and sharp forehand slams that threw the Swede's game off enough that he took two games in a row. The hugely successful tourna-men, tourna-men, which encompassed ages from eight to 51, was well received re-ceived by all who participated.' It was sponsored by the Milford City Youth Committee Ron's Chevron Service and The Beaver County News. |
