Show THORPE WADDINGHMWSCUSSeT ' LEGISLATIVE PROGRAM WITH LIONS Thorpe Waddingham, Utah State Senator and possible president of the next session of the Senate, was the speaker speak-er at the regular meeting of the Milford Lions Club Wednesday Wed-nesday evening. The meeting was held in the Milford High School, with Mrs. Pat Rimpau's Home Economics class catering the dinner. Senator Waddingham, a graduate grad-uate of Milford High School discussed several important matters expected to pose problems prob-lems for the next legislature, which will convene early in 1965. The Senator labeled the Freeport Amendment promotion promo-tion as the "most misleading promotion" he had ever encountered, en-countered, and said the value of the Freeport Amendment would depend upon the type of statute enacted by the Legislature. Legis-lature. He seemed to favor a statute similar to the Nevada Freeport law, which exempts from state and local taxation only merchandise originating outside the state, and held in the state for less than one year before being shipped to another anoth-er destination. Finances, he said, will be the major headache for the lawmakers, and with all previous pre-vious surpluses spent and a major building program a "must," he expects an increase in state income tax to finance the bulding program and operate oper-ate the state offices. Senator Waddingham mentioned men-tioned the heavy pressure put on legislators by various special spe-cial interest groups, and urged that "all interests get together togeth-er on their proposals, consider the over-all problems and the best interests of all residents and factions in the state," before be-fore making requests and demands de-mands on the legislature. State Representative Jack C. Mahoney briefly discussed the road situation in this area, and especiaUy the U-21 and . 1-15 acces at Beaver, and the Min-ersville Min-ersville to Cedar City road. Prior to the dinner, at a brief business session, the Lions accepted an offer of the State Parks and Recreation Commission to appear at a Lions Club meeting after the first of the year and present colored slides explaining their program for 1965; named Joe Jackson chairman of a committee com-mittee to stage a turkey shoot early in December as a hospital hos-pital benefit, and set Dec. 1 as the date for their annual Christmas Party, to be held m the South Milford Community Clubhouse. |
