Show Salt Lake Medic Urges Health Exams for Children Before School The start of the new school year is the best time for parents to make certain their youngsters are in tiptop tip-top physical health, it was pointed out this week. Dr. John Waldo, president of the Salt Lake County Medical Society, said health examinations ex-aminations are a necessity for children chil-dren entering school for the first time, assuring both school officials '; and other parents that the newcomers new-comers are in good health. He noted, however, that health checkups by a physician are desirable desir-able at regular intervals, and are required in some Utah school systems. sys-tems. Health checks prior to entering en-tering the 4th, 7th, and 10th grades are especially wise, the association official declared. A visit to the physician prior to school opening "will, of course, prove of special value in cases where it is decided a youngster needs limitations placed upon his or her activities, due to ailments, defects, or other situations needing need-ing correction," Dr. Waldo noted. In such cases, the physician furnishes fur-nishes the child or the parents with a letter calling attention to the special needs or hazards. Tests given by family physicians for school prior to the start of the term usually include standard examinations ex-aminations for visual acuity, hearing, hear-ing, heart condition, blood, urine, etc. In addition to carefully reviewing re-viewing general health, a preschool pre-school examination gives apportu-nity apportu-nity for making certain immunizations immuniza-tions are up to date. "Booster shots" can be given as required. |
