Show i 9 2 ututo, Qui 9 areata. By STEVE WILLIAMS Well, the Utah Legislature got under way this week, and most of the first flood of bills that hit the hoppers either asked for more spending, more controls on individual indi-vidual liberties, or more taxes. Motorists ain't very happy about the proposed 50 increase in gas tax, and lots of folks wonder why some folks want to let 'em sell beer on Sunday but not groceries. Jack Mahoney of Beaver County Coun-ty hit the jackpot when the committee com-mittee assignments came out. The genial legislator is vice chairman of the highways and aeronautics committee and has assignments on the labor, revenue and taxation, and public health, welfare and institutions committees. And our freshman Senator Wad-dingham Wad-dingham of Delta didn't do so bad. Among others he's on the Senate highways and aeronautics committee. Incidentally, Jack says If anyone any-one wants to write him about anything, any-thing, just address the letter (or telegram) to Jack Mahoney, House of Representtaives, State Capitol, Salt 'Lake City. I Dunno, tout I'd say the FCC is really asking for the tirades, by ordering boosters off the air. The only ones we've ever heard of objecting to boosters are cable system operators, and probably the translator manufacturers. It's ai cinch the millions of folks in fringe areas want 'em, the TV station owners want 'em, the TV advertisers want 'em and when the congressional delegations back in Washington get through hiring extra secretaries to wade through the piles of protest letters and telerams, they're gonna be asking a lot of "Why's" of the FCC boys. We finally got the dope on the Christmas Lighting Contest winners. win-ners. Beaver winners were Louis Les-sing, Les-sing, first ($10), Elva Hodges and Foch Parkinson, second ($7.50 each)( and Ronald Bradshaw, Dr. Bishop and Walter Mackerell third ($5 each). At Milford, Earl Beard was first ($10) in the homes contest, Dan Baudino second ($7.50) and Ben Cooper third ($5). For the business houses it was Horn Silver Hotel first ($10), Dick's Shell Service second ($7.50) and the Western Club third ($5). Almost forget to thank Max Dalley, principal at Parowan High School, for the season pass he always al-ways sends Pat and I to 'all student stu-dent body activities" for 1958-59, and Mel Heslington at Beaver for the season casaba seats. And Bill Wilson at Fillmore for his courtesies. cour-tesies. Publishers sometimes get so used to those niceties that they sometimes forget to acknowledge them. Old-Timer Dear Steve; Here's my check for the paper pa-per for '59. I have taken it for 40 years . . can't quit now! J. R. Lindsay. 6831 Park Drive Bell, Calif. Milford Old-Timers Mr. and Mrs. David S. Williams were in town this week, looking over old haunts. Dave was Milford News editor and publisher, and Mrs. Williams linotype operator, society editor and chief 'devil," from the mid-30s until 1945, when we purchased the paper. After publishing the Caliente Herald for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Williams retired, and now spend their winters in St. George and Kanab, and trailer-travel a bit visiting old friends, relatives, and old haunts. |
