Show County Agent New Alfalfa Worm Infesting Crops j Alfalfa growers in Beaver County should watch their fields for a striped worm which has been found in alfalfa and grain fields of the county. This worm is holding back growth of the second crop of hay in some fields. If damage is too great it may be necessary to spray to control this pest. Horn flies on cattle cause considerable damage to cattle each year in Beaver County by retarding weight gain. These flies can be controlled by spraying spray-ing with various insecticides such as DDT or Methoxychlore or by using a rubbing device with this insecticide mixed with fuel oil and applied to the rubbing rub-bing device. A rubbng device can be made of a cable or barbed wire wrapped wrap-ped with burlap and placed between be-tween two posts or trees. This can be placed in pasture's or near water holes on the ranges. Good control has been obtained ob-tained by using this device. A bulletin on Horn Fly Control can be obtained at the County Agent's office. Cattlemen should have bone meal, or other forms of phosphorous phos-phorous before their cattle so that they can have it free choice the year around. Cattle will gain more, raise more calves and be thriftier if this is done. Phosphorous is the mineral most often lacking in feeds in this area. Bona meal is a good source of this mineral. Bone meal should be mixed with salt to make it more palatable. 25 to 50 bone meal and the rest salt. Miss Elna Miller, Extension Nutritionist at the U S U in Logan, will be in Beaver County Coun-ty to meet with all Foods 4-H Club members and leaders on July 11. Meetings will be held in Beaver, Minersville and Milford. |
