Show 16A Signpost Tuesday, September 23, 1986 N ews Briefs Faculty oriented at Weber State College A new faculty orientation was held Thursday, Sept. 18, 1986. The meeting was sponsored by the ad hoc committee on new faculty orientation of the faculty senate. The second annual meeting provided an opportunity for new faculty members to meet with those administrators, faculty and staff personnel whose services they will be using during their tenure at Weber State. PKP stages conference at Michigan State Dr. Neila Seshachari, president of the Weber State College Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, recently attended a conference at Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan. The four-day convention brought together representatives from most of the society's 243 chapters for informative discussion seminars, general business meetings, revision of bylaws, and the election of national officers. The primary objective of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the recognition and encouragement of superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi awards 50 $6,000 fellowships and 30 $500 honorable mention awards to support first year graduate work. IRS holds seminars Recently, the Internal Revenue Service announced a nationwide series of free seminars to help people who file information returns on magnetic media meet the legal and technical filing requirements.A seminar will be held Sept. 30, at the Salt Lake Public Library, 209 E. Fifth S., Salt Lake City. The seminar will include presentations from the IRS and the Social Security Administration regarding filing information returns on magnetic media. Discussions will provide programming guidelines and technical information for programmers. Although seminars are free, reservations are necessary. IABC gives awards of excellence Eighteen awards of excellence were presented to communicators by the In-termountain Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) at an awards luncheon held in August. Kevin Mansfield, president, said almost 200 entries were received in categories that ranged from publications and photography to audio-visual productions and total public relations campaigns. The awards were presented at the luncheon during a day-long communications management seminar presented by the IABC Intermountain Chapter. Eighteen new faculty members were presented at the meeting. Most of them will be teaching full time this coming year, while some will be on campus on a part-time basis. Earlier this month, the new full-time faculty members were given a packet of materials and information to help them get settled into the Ogden area and Weber State. Bookstore announces computer contest Apple Computer, Inc: has started a promotion at the Weber State College Bookstore. The promotion, "Two Ways Apple Moves you Into the Fast Lane," began Sept. 15. Weber State is one of 150 campuses across the country to be participating in the promotion. All registered students can qualify to win the grand prize of a 12-speed Trek Model 310 sport bicycle by visiting the Macintosh computer display at the bookstore.
