Allen's screen compositions range from hilariously funny pieces, such as "Bananas" and "Sleeper," to more philosophical works such as "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan." Saturday, October 21, was the scene for Allen's '"Manhattan." I approached this show with some trepidation, having seen it once previously (while residing in Manhattan) and being thoroughly unimpressed. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised on the second viewing. "Manhattan" is definitely not light, escapist entertainment, but it does go along way toward portraying and satarizing a segment of New York neurotic society. The problems in "Manhattan" are realistic and relevant to life in the '80's. "Sleeper" is the near oposit of "Manhattan." This movie is a comic escape to the world of the future where Woody Allen wakes up to find himself a stranger in a strange land. Through escapades dealing with giant vegetables, space-age vehicles, and of course a woman, Woody steers the audience deftly through uproarious scenes fraught with his own peculiar brand of humor. The Festival continues through Wednesday with a variety of Woody films: Tuesday, Oct. 26, "Love and Death" (7:35) and "Interiors" (9:10). Wednesday, Oct. 27, "Love and Death" (7:35)' and "Stardust Memories" (9:10). For every dedicated Allener then, the Utah III Theatre (161 So. Main) is the place to see the classics. Billy Joel gives enthusiastic concert by Joan Wilcox Signature Editor Billy Joel, in his first U.S. concert tour in two and a half years, knocked 'em dead at the Salt Palace Sunday night. Playing to a near capacity crowd, Joel performed most of his hit songs for over two hours. The concert started forty minutes late as the band fine tuned the sound equipment. It was well worth the wait as the acoustics were clear and the sound was fantastic. Joel's versatile voice and skillful piano playing soon had his fans rocking in the aisles. He was backed up by six musicians who provided excellent accompaniment. Joel roamed the stage playing four differnet keyboards. His drive and raw energy seemed to fill the Salt Palace. Joel took a few minutes out to talk to the crowd. He reminisced about the old Terrace Ballroom in SLC and made jokes about Utah's liquor laws. He said he'd been in town two days and had been Come to WSC Cosmetology for Great Hair at the Right Price Haircut $250 Facial $500 Style $300 Manicure $1 50 Perm Wave $ 1000 and Up For an appointment call 626-6309 Walk-ins are Welcome m Isff Cosmetology 12 noon -3:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9 am -3:30 pm Thursday and Friday looking for a place to have a drink. "They told me I had to pay for a membership to a private club in order to drink," he joked. He then dedicated the song "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to all those in the crowd who have to endure Utah liquor laws. No special effects were used at this concert, nor were they needed. Joel carried the crowd on pure talent. He belted out such songs as "It's Still Rock 'n Roll to Me," "The Stranger," "Through the Long Night," and "Just the Way You Are." The music was not loud enough to drown out his often searing lyrics and the crowd often sang along with him . Joel seemed thrilled to be back touring the U.S. After over two hours of performing, he lingered on stage saluting the audience and shaking hands. The crowd was on its feet whistling and cheering. Joel was called back for three encores. After a half hour of encores, the stage finally dimmed and the band exited. But the crowd stayed. Feet-stamping and whistling finally brought Billy Joel back for a fourth and final encore. Billy Joel is a versatile, multi-talented performer and puts in a powerful show. No one went away disappointed Sunday night. TAEE0FF0iA ESES'2-FLYEi!G CAREER AS A FLEGEJTOFFECEft. Be part of the Navy aviation team a Naval Flight Officer.
