Show Tuesday, October 26, 1982 11 CENTER STAQE Showdown: The movies Christopher Reeve continues to develop himself as an actor by Lisa Wright and Steve Largent "Are Christopher Reeve's eyes really that blue? " was the question that Lisa kept asking throughout the movie. We never did decide if they were really that blue, or if he had on blue contact lenses. We did decide that even if the movie 'Mon-signor" is not destined for an Academy Award for best picture of the year, it might rate a close 52nd. "Monsignor" is set during World War II. The Nazi's have overrun much of Europe and the Russians are closing in from the east. The Vatican, while trying to remain neutral, is having severe cash flow problems. Christopher Reeve plays Father Flaherty, a chaplin in the U.S. Army, who is assigned to the Vatican. He comes in contact with an old friend who is stationed in Rome with the army and who is enjoying a life style not known to many soldiers without "connections". Father Flaherty, seeing what his friend has done for himself, devises a scheme to get the Church out of hot water. However, he first must sell the idea to Cardinal San-tini, his immediate supervisor in the Vatican. With that feat accomplished, Father Flaherty is given free reign over church financial matters, while the Pope and Cardinal Santini "look the other way." The plot is complicated by Clara played by Genevieve Bujold who is looking for a way to ease the hurt in her life. Father Flaherty is more than willing to lend assistance. She knows him as Lt. Fin-nigan, an American soldier on the make. As an actor, Christopher Reeve is expanding his portfolio of characters. Although at times, Flaherty may have lacked depth, particularly as he aged, Reeve was able to be convincing in his role and fit the part well. None of the other characters were portrayed strongly enough to really stand out. A real disappointment in the movie was the ending. Nothing led up to the conclusion. One was left hanging and wondering what had happened to the rest of the script. One of the biggest surprises of the movie was its "R" rating. Profanity was almost non-existant (maybe because they were in the Vatican). Violence was restricted to two extremely short scenes and nudity was kept to a bare minimum If you are looking for a movie that is not too intellectually challenging and yet somewhat entertaining, "Monsignor" would be a good choice.
