Show PHILIPPINE RESOLUTIONS. Declare In Favor of Giving Islands Independence Inde-pendence Under Protection. Washington, Dec, 16. Two joint resolutions res-olutions were introduced in the house of representatives today by Represen-j Represen-j tativa Wiliiams of Mississippi, which are the result of consultation among a number of the Democratic leaders in the house, and are understood to be expressive of their general position on the Philippines. The first resolution deolares the intention aod purpose to recognize the independence of the Filipinos and withdraw our land and naval forces, provided the indepen-ent indepen-ent govornment agree to refund the $30,000,000 paid by the United States to Spain, to give us a suitable naval and coaling station, and grant in perpetuity per-petuity free access to their ports. - Another section pledges our friendly assistance and also pledges against foreign for-eign interference or aggression for ten years, during which time 'the foreign affairs of the islands are to be under American control. The other resolution asks for infor mation relative to the conclusion of a treaty with the sultan of Jolo, and provides pro-vides for an inquiry by the judiciary committee as to whether the constitutional constitu-tional provisions against slavery and the statutory provisions against polygamy polyg-amy apply to the Sulu people. |
