Show Terrible Condition of Central-St. George Road Told Governor Maw (Editor's Note: B. A. Sweet, who owns a .ranch at Central, approached ap-proached us recently about the terrible condition of the road between be-tween here and Central. We told him of the general set-up insofar as we were acquainted with it and suggested that he get the people of that section united behind be-hind a demand for action. Mr. Sweet declared that he was going to see what could be done and we agreed to help him in any way possible. The following letter was sent by him to Governor Herbert B. Maw. It should prove of interest in-terest to the people of this section. sec-tion. To date, Governor Maw's answer is not available.) His Excellency the Governor, Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Governor: About September first I bought a farm at Central, Utah, and I have spent most of my time in this locality since. During the rodeo at St. George, I was very pleased to learn that the Chamber of Commerce of St. George had solicited your-'interest in the road that leads north of St. George to Enterprise. I was also pleased to learn that you stated that work would start on this road not later than October first and that several thousand dollars would be spent on it for improvements. I left Central on Monday of this week end at that time no work had been started on it. In all of my travels throughout through-out the United States I have never had the experience of riding rid-ing on such a deplorable road as the St. George to Enterprise State Highway. The road from Central to Enterprise is not so bad but the road from Central to St. George is a real trial. In these days of tire conservation i! seems to me that to have a road in this condition it is really tragic. And regarding the way this road is being maintainsd- - I do not know who is responsible for its maintenance but I have personally seen thousands of rocks about 4 by 5 inches in diameter dumped into the road for road dressing. This would mdicae a definite lack of experience ou the i-part of the maintenance crew as j to how to maintain this road. The (Continued on page eight) Letter To Governor (Continued from first page) road from St. George to Central could be oiled 'he way we oil roods i.i California at a very lew cost and thereby mad'.1 a good black-top road. There is a good deal of farm produce hauled over this road and much travel on it by people living in that vicinity and I think it deserves more consideration than has heretofore been shown it. When is work going to start on this road ? I hope we may look forward to a much better road soon. Sincerely yours, B. A. Sweet, |
