Show Whiteheads To Celebrate 60th Wedding Fete Monday, Nov. 22nd, will mark the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Whitehead, and Mr, Whitehead's 80th birthday birth-day anniversary. To celebrate the double event, Mrs. Ray Bentley and Mrs. Rex Gardner, daughters, will hold open house at the Gardner Gard-ner home Sunday, Nov. 21st, from 3 to 6 p. m. A family dinner will honor the couple at their home on Monday. Born In Salt Lake City Born in Salt Lake City Nov 22 1863, George F. Whitehead was a son of Adolphus Renme and Mary Elizabeth Goddard Whitehead. The family came to Washington in 1866 where his father was factory superintendent. At age eight he helped his mother drive a covered wagon a""'1- to Salt Lake City and return. Often he and other boys used Indian bows to kill quail which were then plentiful in this area. Besides local schooling he took advanced work in Salt fity in 1877. He followed fol-lowed this trade for 25 years helping help-ing build many local homes. At age 15 he was an officer in the old Fourth ward Sunday school. He was for years a member of the martial and brass bands, and says he has played baseball more years than any other man in St. George. Nov. 22, 1883, he was married in the St. George Temple to Esther Jane Morris, daughter of Richard and Emma Packard Morris, Mor-ris, also Dixie pioneers. She was uuni lit o2ii ijdit; ny jail, xi?, 1864. So far as known they are the oldest living Dixie pioneer couple. Both have been active in L.D.S. church work. Mr. Whitehead filled an L. D. S mission to the eastern states from 1899 to 1901, his wife caring for their six chidlren in his absence'. On his return, he was made a counselor to Edward H. Snow in the St.. George stake presidency, serving until 1925. He was president of the St. George Temple from 1927 to 1937. Mrs. Whitehead served 25 years in the West ward Relief Society presidency; presi-dency; 22 years of these as president; presi-dent; eight years as Primary teacher and! 30 years a: member of the Old Folks committee. She has also been' known for her culture cul-ture of dahlias and for her fine vegetable gardens. Held Civic Positions In a civic capacity Mr. Whitehead White-head has served as county recorder, re-corder, county clerk, chairman of county commissioners, member of the St. Georg city council, Mayor of St. George for one term, and several terms as Justice of the Peace, which position he still holds at the age of 801. Their living children include Dr. Frank Whitehead, state dairy inspector in-spector of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Gordon Whfthead, Mrs. Ray Bent-ley Bent-ley and Mrs. Rex Gardner, all of St. George; Morris R. Whitehead White-head of Oaikland; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. . |
